Postpartum Psychosis (PPP)

Postpartum psychosis (PPP) is rare. Generally only 1-2% of every 1000 women who give birth will experience PPP after childbirth. It usually develops quickly after, but it may not occur for up to one year after giving birth. Some of the symptoms are:

  • Hearing voices
  • Seeing visions
  • Problems sleeping – or not sleeping at all
  • Hopelessness
  • Feeling agitated, angry
  • Excessive worry
  • Distrusting of others. Thinking someone or something is out to harm her or the baby.
  • Excessive talking
  • Jumping from topic to topic when speaking
  • Confusion / disorientation
  • Hyperactive
  • Elevated mood, restlessness

May include:

  • Suicidal or homicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Bizarre delusions and commands to harm the infant

If you or someone you love is experiencing these symptoms, please go immediately to your healthcare provider or your mental health therapist for an assessment. Treatment works!
