Public Address of the Associate Minister of Health of New Zealand

Wednesday, 3/27/2013

Peter Dunne, Associate Minister of Health for New Zealand, in his address to the Perinatal Health Trust on on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, outlined his countries plan to address the problem of maternal mental health. He stated that:

"The Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee reports on the causes of maternal mortality and the major cause of death for women during pregnancy and in the 42 days following the end of the pregnancy is suicide. While this is a tiny subset of the overall figures for suicide, it is a distressing reality, and it is very concerning that suicide features so highly in the maternal mortality numbers, particularly when the suicide occurs during pregnancy."

Selected Pregnancy and Delivery Outcomes After Exposure to Antidepressant Medication

Friday, 3/15/2013

Although statistically significant associations between antidepressant exposure and pregnancy and delivery outcomes were identified, group differences were small and scores in the exposed group were typically in the normal ranges indicating the importance of considering clinical significance. Treatment decisions must weigh the effect of untreated maternal depression against the potential adverse effects of antidepressant exposure.

Sen. President Pro Tempore Darroll Steinberg Urges a National Mental Health Initiative Similar to California's Prop 63.

According to information from the United Advocates for Children and Families (UACF), Sen. President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg sent a letter to VP Biden -- whom President Obama has called on to oversee a review of gun control legislation and gun violence -- urging him to consider California's program, Prop 63, as a template for national mental health initiatives. Steinberg in a press conference also suggested that the federal government agree to match money raised by states to create a national mental health system.

Steinberg's proposal is supported by several lawmakers, including Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.), who recently sponsored the Excellence in Mental Health Act (HR 5989).

Most New Mothers Skip Sex for at Least 6 Weeks After Childbirth

Friday, 3/1/2013

It is very common for women and their partners to want information about when sexual activity may be safely and comfortably resumed, and what to expect in relation to the impact of childbirth on their relationship. This is useful information for couples to know before their baby is born, and may help reduce feelings of anxiety and guilt about not resuming sexual activity sooner. It is important to remember that these decisions are down to the individual couple and when it feels right for them.
